A Look at Nazrul's Society from His Perspective Nazrul is a renowned poet from Bangladesh, who is best known for his protest songs during the Bengal renaissance in India in the late 19th century. He has written many works in different modes of poetry, prose, short stories and plays. Whilst Nazrul's greater renown may lie in his poems protesting British colonialism through its clear defiance against the 'Thousand-year Raj' (British rule) he also wrote on religious tolerance, women rights and self- respect for his compatriots. These themes are best assessed in the works of his that were written in prose, particularly in his short stories and plays. Nazrul's work abounds with references to women in general, with female protagonists who act as heroines, victims and villains. A number of these female characters demonstrate both positive and negative traits. Some are undoubtedly positive characters, like the young heroine Hakim's wife (in the story 'Hakim's Wife') who is obedient to her husband and also bears his illegitimate child without complaining too much. On the other hand, the prostitute Parvati's character is openly immoral. It is however, her defiant attitude that makes her a positive character in this story. The tale tells of Parvati's memorable defiance against the British Raj. Nazrul seems to have been torn between his belief and practice of religion and his staunch support for women's rights and self-respect. His numerous songs on women and religion were written during a period of major social change for Bangladeshi women where they gained more freedom to move about, their education was enhanced and marriages were no longer arranged by their parents as they once used to be under Muslim rule. Nazrul, most likely, wanted to guide his younger female relatives into a more liberal way of thinking and likewise wanted to shape their relationships with men into a more equal and positive attitude. Hakim's Wife is essentially a story of the relationship between Hakim and his wife Azmatun Nisa. This story professes to be about the three daughters of Hakim: Azmatun Nisa (the youngest) who was brought up in an atmosphere of religion and piety; Amal (the eldest) who did not want to be bothered by religious issues; while Muna (the third) was very much faithful towards her husband. This story unfolds through the concerned observations of the mother, Sumaira Bibi, who takes up her pen for the sake of her daughter Azmatun Nisa. Hakim's Wife was written by Nazrul in 1894. It portrays well the society of that period. The moral outlooks of people under British rule are portrayed here in a realistic way. This is because both Nazrul and his half-brother Kazi Salahuddin wanted to check the excessive power of British rule by portraying it in a realistic way. They also use this opportunity to depict their struggle against British rule and other social evils prevailing everywhere including their country at that time. cfa1e77820
